Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie, the gubernatorial candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) in Edo State, has revealed a groundbreaking vision for transforming the education sector in the state. With a focus on science and technology, technical/vocational education, and international partnerships, Dr. Aikoriogie aims to provide quality education for all Edo indigenes and residents.
One of the key initiatives of Dr. Aikoriogie’s education reform plan is the establishment of the Samuel Ogbemudia University of Science and Technology (SOUST) in Udo and Ukhronigbe. This research-based institution will prioritize technology transfer, innovation, and creativity, with a curriculum modeled after prestigious universities in the United States.
In addition, Dr. Aikoriogie plans to strengthen primary and secondary schools in Edo State by integrating Edo language as a compulsory subject and implementing audiovisuals with internet connectivity in all schools. Technical and vocational education will be prioritized, with schools established in each Local Government Area through partnerships with international organizations like UNESCO and the World Bank.
Furthermore, Dr. Aikoriogie’s education reform plan includes initiatives to train and retrain teachers, visit China and India to adapt curricula to the local environment, and declare free education for all Edo indigenes and residents at the primary and secondary levels. The plan also involves banning street hawking by children of school age and implementing feeding programs in public schools through public-private partnerships.
To ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives, monthly stakeholders’ meetings will be held across the three senatorial districts, involving key stakeholders in the education sector. Renovation and remodeling of all public schools will also be carried out to meet international standards and making rural areas more attractive for teachers in terms of remuneration and incentives.
Dr. Aikoriogie’s education reform plan represents a significant step towards improving the quality of education in Edo State and driving economic growth through the exportation of expatriate talents. With a strategic focus on technology, innovation, and international collaboration, the plan aims to position Edo State as a hub for cutting-edge education and skills development in Nigeria.
